Oh Maya!

Discover Ancient Mayan Ruins

The countries of Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and Belize are all home to intriguing Mayan ruins – take a trip through history and experience them for yourself.

A lost civilization

Palenque ruinsThe Mayan civilization in Central America reached its peak around the sixth century – and across these countries, ruins of its monuments still stand today. Most of the cities were abandoned by the year 900, with historians still unsure on the precise reasoning behind their decline.

Alongside the white sand and palm trees, Tulum in Mexico is a popular spot to visit ruins. However, nearby Chichen Itza is perhaps one of the most highly-regarded sites, the largest of the archaeological cities of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization. It was also added to the New Seven Wonders of the World – and there’s plenty of wonder to be found here!

Palenque is situated on a hilltop in an area of hot jungle and is home to possibly the most impressive series of Mayan ruins and architecture. The temples are impressive relics left behind by Mayan culture and there are many ruins here still unexcavated, hidden amongst the trees.
