Tales from a Trekker: Why TrekAmerica is a Great Start to Your Travels

  • Travelling with TrekAmerica

With so many of you lovely Trekkers joining us on the road each year we have decided to publish some of your stories right here for past, present and future Trekkers to read all about. We share with you their worries, their memories and their passion for adventure. Enjoy!

Why TrekAmerica is a Great Start to Your Travels
Written by Eliza Wasilik aka Elitravelbug

There are two main reasons why I decided to book with TrekAmerica:

1. The desire to travel the USA
2. The worry of doing it all by myself (whether it's the planning or the travelling alone)

If the above are your reasons too, TrekAmerica is perfect for you.

Now, let's clear one thing up! You are not going to be solo. Yes, your friends from home will not be with you but by the time you get to the US, your solo adventure ends. In fact, some people even manage to find their future Trek buddies on the TrekAmerica Live forum and end up on the same plane.

If you are worried about joining a group of strangers and wondering if you'll be ok.. You will be!

Think of it this way, everyone will be in the same boat and everyone is there to do the same thing. Which brings us back to those two reasons why you have all booked the Trek in the first place – the desire to travel around America and not wanting to do it solo. It's very rare that your Trek buddy will not be interested in making new friends, else why would that person pay to spend a few weeks with 11 other people in one van?

You will all be like-minded

However even if you're not, the differences between everyone will be minimised due to the level of excitement, which will be high. Before departure, I decided to make a pact with myself: 'I promise to have fun, go with the flow, be open minded, not worry about the little things and if worst comes to worst – I might never see these people again'

Turns out I am still friends with most of my group and we have our regular meet-ups every few months!

Travelling with TrekAmerica

Now let's get back to the purpose of this post...

Most people get a real travel bug after their trip with TrekAmerica and many decide to continue their travels after, whether it's solo or with someone they met on their trip or a friend back home. Below are the reasons why I believe that TrekAmerica is a great start to your travels.

Everything is organised for you

It's likely that this will be your first travel experience, which is great as you don't have to worry about a thing. You're duty is to go out there and have fun. This will give you an idea of what kind of travel you like – whether you enjoy having everything planned or next time you'd like a bit more freedom.

Trek leader

Your leader is super important, he or she will take you to places you never knew existed and maybe thought you wouldn't be interested in. You'll end up doing things you never considered doing before, or think you might not be comfortable with. Let's say it's camping – most likely you'll really enjoy it, or maybe decide that actually hotels are more of your thing. Either way, you've experienced it and know for the future. I realised that hostels for example don't have to be scary at all, they're great and very social, which I was clueless about before.

Worries prior to Trek

Considering you will most likely still be worried and picturing the worst (even after reading reviews online saying the exact opposite), soon after the Trek starts, you'll realise it was completely unnecessary. This will make you more confident and less worried in the future. Realising how meeting people on your travels is actually much easier than it is back home will make you considerably less frightened to take the plunge and plan another adventure, maybe this time completely solo.

Travelling with TrekAmerica

Confidence booster

You have taken the plunge and travelled around America with complete strangers and found it to be absolutely fine. You've hiked the Grand Canyon, spent long hours in a van, camped (and rocked at it) or stayed in hostels. You can do this – you're ready for the next step, to take on the world.

Time on the road

This might be your first time away from home, not including the all-inclusive holidays for example. The experience will show you how living without your usual comforts is totally possible – not using your straighteners or laptop for a few days (or even weeks) is absolutely fine and actually quite satisfying.

No matter how old you are or what part of the world you're in – your Trek memories will last forever. The best part is that even the tougher times will later on be a part of this unforgettable and life changing experience and you'll consider them as a great life lesson and awesome story to tell.
