Tonight it's time to meet your tour leader and group, but why not arrive early to see the sights, or add some extra hotel nights before the start of your tour to really explore all the city has to offer.

Welcome to the urban metropolis that is the Peruvian capital, Lima. It's a large, lively city, but many of the sights including the city's two main squares, the Plaza de Armas and Plaza San Martin, are within easy walking distance of your hotel and great for a spot of people watching! Explore at your own pace and wander through the historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with top-notch museums. Foodies rejoice as Lima is known as the `gastronomic capital of the Americas'. Cow's heart is a local delicacy. but Lima offers plenty of other adventurous dishes to try inspired by Andean, European and Asian cuisines.

Hop on a quick internal flight to the high-altitude city of Arequipa, watched over by three mighty volcanoes. Seek out trendy cafes, contemporary art and enjoy the laid-back hipster vibes. At 2,380 metres above sea level, Arequipa is the perfect place for you to acclimatise before heading to Cusco and the Inca Trail in a few days' time.

Arequipa is also our launching point for an included day trip to the gargantuan Colca Canyon, the second deepest canyon in the world and almost twice as deep as the Grand Canyon! Views of the canyon itself are of course epic, but watching magnificent Andean Condors swooping overhead from the Cruz del Condor viewpoint is a real highlight.

Take in the incredible roadside views as you journey by bus to the small city of Puno, on the shores of Lake Titicaca. A trip to Puno's colourful markets is a great introduction to this traditional Andean city, which is known as the `folkloric capital of Peru' and proud of its Aymara and Quechua traditions.

After a night in Puno, set sail on an included day trip across Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world (3,855 metres above sea level), a classic Peruvian experience! Spend the day weaving around the famous floating islands, and you can even hop aboard a traditional reed boat. Dock at one of the Uros Islands to meet some of the local people and learn about their unique way of life and how they preserve their traditions.

Wind your way through the Andes towards the imperial Inca city of Cusco, home to some architectural gems, incredible ancient ruins, alluring adventure activities and a buzzing nightlife. You're guaranteed a good time!

You have free time to explore all that Cusco has to offer, but a journey through the Sacred Valley of the Incas is a highly recommended way to spend a day. You'll visit the impressive Pisac ruins perched high in the mountains and the famous market which is a great place for picking up local crafts and jewellery, not to mention colourful ponchos. It's also a chance to treat yourself to some delicious empanadas. Then make your way down the valley to the temple fortress of Ollantaytambo, before heading back to Cusco.

Cusco is a fun town to explore in its own right but it's also a great base for trekking the famous Inca Trail to Machu Picchu (if you prefer not to trek, you can also book the train to Machu Picchu). These optional activities must be booked in advance; please request at the time of booking your tour to avoid missing out!

This is an optional so if trekking is not your thing and you are happier to spend time exploring Cusco, there is plenty for you to see and do both during the day and in the evening. Grab yourself a Completo visitor ticket for entrance to all the Inca ruin sites around Cusco and the Sacred Valley, or indulge in an optional chocolate making course for something a little bit different. Cusco is legendary for its nightlife, so get some friends together for a Pisco Sour or two.

The Lost City of Machu Picchu was originally isolated in the clouds and self-contained, fed by natural springs and surrounded by agricultural terraces to feed the population. Due to its isolation many of the palaces, temples, baths and houses of the ancient Incan city still remain remarkably intact. Like all good surprises, the ruins were only unearthed when the explorer Hiram Bingham accidentally stumbled upon them while looking for a different lost city, cheers Hiram.

This iconic site is really something special and if you don't want to miss the once in a lifetime opportunity to visit Machu Picchu but prefer not to hike the Inca Trail, you can also choose to make the journey to Machu Picchu by train. Spend the day exploring this fascinating site (guided tour included), visit the hot springs at Aguas Calientes or meander through the markets before returning to Cusco by train.

This optional journey must be booked in advance. Please request at the time of booking your tour.

If you opt to hike the trail you'll cross spectacular passes and visit more incredible Inca ruins en route to the Lost City of the Incas, Machu Picchu. Along the way a local guide will share their expertise with you, plus there are cooks and porters to carry the main equipment. A small daypack is all you require, so you can focus on putting one foot in front of the other. Have your camera at the ready as you climb high among breathtaking landscapes and incredible cloud forests.

Day one is fairly relaxed, beginning with a short train and bus journey to the Inca Trail start point. From here you'll hike 13km which should take roughly four-and-a-half hours and will get you limbered up for the days ahead. On day two, you'll cover a total of 9km in about five to seven hours. Set out to conquer the highest pass at 4,200m (`Dead Woman's Pass'), then after the high pass it's downhill on old Inca stairs towards your second campsite. On day three you will trek past the ruins of Runkurakay, Sayacmarca and Phuyupatamarca, walking a total of 15km in seven hours and camping near the ancient citadel of Winay-Wayna. Wake up on summit day (day four) ready and raring to go, as you rise early to make your final steps towards Machu Picchu and catch the morning sun looming over the famous Sun Gate.

A guided tour of the awesome lost city of Machu Picchu is included and there's time to explore on your own too. Take the chance to soak your weary muscles in the hot springs at Aguas Calientes, before making your way back to modern civilisation in Cusco to wash off the trail dirt with a well-deserved shower. You might decide to celebrate by joining one of the bar crawls in the city, but go easy as alcohol at this altitude travels faster through the bloodstream!

The porters, cooks and guides work incredibly hard on the Inca Trail and the Lares Trail, carrying food needed for the four days, cooking equipment, tents and your personal items. While it is an optional payment, we recommend a tip of 100 Soles per person at the end of the route, to be split between your trail guides, porters and chefs.

Please note: Due to a restricted number of people being allowed on the trail each day, permits can sell out many months in advance. If you wish to book the Inca Trail trek, please provide a member of our sales team with your passport details as soon as possible to secure your permit. Without your passport details, we aren't able to arrange your Inca Trail trek. Please be aware that once your permit has been issued it is non-refundable and non-transferable. Should an Inca Trail permit not be available, you will have the option to book a two night/three day Lares Trail trek. A guided tour of Machu Picchu is included.
